What is a “split”? Somewhere along the line some judges have determined that if a dog drifts several feet off the check and hits a line while the other dog works off the point of loss and finds the line, this is a split and both dogs should be caught and given another rabbit. It would be interesting to hear how various judges handle this scenario. It is not as simple as it sounds.

To me (I am not a judge and am open to discussion on this) a split is when two dogs tracking come across a line(s) that blend and then separate…one dog follows one line, the other the other line…like a Y.
In the case noted I would feel that the dog who worked from the loss defeated the “looser” dog..however, if the judges had not yet seen enough to score the dogs, they COULD have the handler pick up the wanderer and place it behind the other and continue to track…OR call it a split and give them another rabbit…and proceed from there.
I once sat waiting with JW Kidd (to put down the next brace) and judges gave a brace four-five different rabbits..they “split” on the first ones..one doing just as described in Russ’ statement each time…took about an hour to get that one brace run..JW said he had never seen anything like it..I know I had not. Both dogs came back in second series…left a bad taste in my mouth..really makes you wonder why? .Made some look askance at the judges.
I think this is the type of thing that has hurt brace beagling. Judges should be careful about how things appear to the gallery esp. when it appears that they are givng preferential treatment to a certain few.

You know that ia very strange thing to happen, with the wondering dog. I think that id the dog wondering around and stricks another line. Then this is not a split. I see the very same thing happen a at a trial a just awhile a go. The dogds was put on a line into cover. Both dogs was barking on the line headeding into the cover. The lead dog keep the line going thur the middle of the cover. The back dog barked a few time only. The lead dog turned the line to the left and stayed on it until the rabbitt came out of the cover and went up a feed strip. Dog number two didn;t bark for a little while. The next thing I knew the dog was about 10-12 feet from where it was supposed to be. Well the lead dog brought the line out and started up the strip where the rabbitt had gone. Well one of the judges told the other one, we have a spit.In my book this was not spitWell they gave the pair another rabbitt. This rabbit went into the cover also. The lead dog ran the line all the way thur the cover. The 2nd dog barked a few time. Well we seen the rabbitt come out and went down the strip.Well the lead dog ran the rabbitt down the strip and turned it right onto another strip.Dog number two feel in good after the rabbitt came out on the strip from the cover. It honored the lead dog and turn the rabbitt also onto the other strip. They made the dogs go on down the strip a long way befor they oreder them up. The main promblem I had was that the judges didn’t even go into the cover ever to see what is going on on eighter run. I think that the dog number two or the back doge should have been cut for wondering out of place and the number one dog or lead dog should have been given credit for bringing the rabbitt out the first time. They should have gone in the cover to see the run also. But they didn’t do eighter one. They called it a split and gave the brace another rabbitt. What I’m saying is when you are judging a trial ,go where you have too to see the run and don’t give a wondering dog another chance. If the spit was close to the first rabbitt fine then call it a split but not 10-12 away from the check.
